Northaw Fitted Dressing Room: Design, Storage & Lighting

A closer look at the Blyton fitted wardrobes, Matt Cashmere doors, Dark Brown Eucalyptus detailing, bespoke storage zones, integrated wardrobe lighting and central dressing-table furniture used in this Northaw master-bedroom dressing area.

Designing a Bespoke Master-Bedroom Dressing Area

This fitted dressing room was completed for residential developer L W Developments as part of a wider luxury new-build development in Northaw, Hertfordshire. The brief was to create a high-specification dressing area off the master bedroom, with the furniture designed specifically for the room and the agreed specification of the property.

The layout needed to balance visual symmetry with practical everyday storage. Rather than working around fixed modular cabinet sizes, the wardrobes and dressing-table furniture were designed to suit the available space. The result combines full-height hinged wardrobes with different internal storage zones and a central area dedicated to getting ready.

The project uses the Blyton range in Price Group 1. Matt Cashmere flat-fronted doors create the lighter part of the design, while Egger Dark Brown Eucalyptus H3043 ST12 is used inside the wardrobes and for contrasting external fitted-furniture details. Brushed steel Boros handles complete the hinged doors.

Inside, the wardrobe layouts are not repeated identically from one section to another. Long hanging, double hanging, shelving and internal chests of drawers are used according to the storage needs of each area. Every fitted wardrobe also incorporates internal LED lighting that illuminates when its doors are opened.

The central wardrobe run is broken up by a bespoke dressing-table area built into the fitted furniture. Its lighting is controlled separately using a discreet push-button switch, allowing the dressing area to be brightly illuminated when required. The furniture uses Simply Fitted Wardrobes' full 18mm carcass construction standard where applicable, including 18mm sides, bases, tops and solid backs.

The Customer Brief

A Dressing Area for a High-Specification New Build

The furniture needed to suit the standard of the new-build master bedroom while providing practical storage for everyday clothes and a dedicated area for getting ready. Each element was designed specifically for the room rather than selected from standard cabinet widths.

The Design Challenge

Contrast, Symmetry & Different Storage Zones

The design needed to keep the overall dressing area visually balanced while allowing individual wardrobe sections to perform different jobs. The light Matt Cashmere doors also needed to work deliberately against the much darker woodgrain interior and surrounding details.

The Solution

Made to Measure Furniture with Integrated Lighting

The finished design combines full-height hinged wardrobes, varied wardrobe interiors, lighting within every wardrobe and a central illuminated dressing table, all manufactured around the actual room and agreed fitted-furniture specification.

What Makes a Fitted Dressing Room Feel Considered?

A successful dressing area is not only about the door finish. The interior layout, lighting, handle choice, contrasting materials and position of the dressing table all affect how the room works. Designing these elements together allows the furniture to make better use of the available space while creating a more coherent result than treating each wardrobe as an isolated unit.

Fitted Dressing Room Advice & FAQs

Practical guidance from this completed Northaw dressing room, including wardrobe lighting, mixed interior storage, Matt Cashmere and dark woodgrain finishes, integrated dressing-table furniture and made to measure construction.

Planning Storage and Lighting in a Fitted Dressing Room

A fitted dressing room works best when the wardrobes, interiors, lighting and dressing area are planned as one piece of fitted furniture. This Northaw project combines full-height hinged wardrobes with a central dressing table rather than treating the dressing table as a separate freestanding item.

The inside of the wardrobes is equally important. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and internal drawers each suit different types of storage, so the interior layout can change from one wardrobe section to another. You can see more examples on our wardrobe interiors page.

Lighting also needs to reflect how each part of the furniture is used. Here, the LED lighting inside every wardrobe illuminates when the doors are opened, while the dressing-table lighting has its own discreet push-button switch. Keeping those controls separate gives each area the type of lighting it actually needs.

The contrast between Matt Cashmere doors and Dark Brown Eucalyptus interiors and surrounds shows how a lighter door finish can be paired with a much darker woodgrain without making the doors themselves dark. For broader planning advice, see our fitted wardrobe guide.

Storage Zoning Different wardrobe sections can do different jobs

Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and internal drawers do not need to be repeated in the same arrangement throughout the room.

Lighting Control Plan wardrobe and dressing-table lighting separately

Door-activated wardrobe lighting and separately switched dressing-table lighting suit two different everyday uses.

Bespoke Construction Build the furniture around the room

Made to measure furniture avoids relying on standard modular widths, while our full 18mm carcass standard includes 18mm sides, bases, tops and solid backs where applicable.

Can LED lighting be installed inside fitted wardrobes?

Yes. In this Northaw dressing room, every fitted wardrobe incorporates internal LED lighting. The lights illuminate when the wardrobe doors are opened, helping to illuminate the clothes and storage inside each wardrobe.

Can wardrobe and dressing-table lighting be controlled separately?

Yes. In this Northaw project, the LED lighting inside each wardrobe illuminates when the hinged doors are opened, while the central dressing-table lighting is operated independently using a discreet push-button switch.

Can a fitted dressing room combine long hanging, double hanging, shelving and drawers?

Yes. This project combines long hanging, double hanging, shelving and internal chests of drawers. The individual wardrobe sections were planned around their own storage requirements rather than repeating exactly the same internal arrangement throughout the dressing room.

See more ideas on our wardrobe interiors page.

Can fitted wardrobes be designed around a central dressing table?

Yes. In this Northaw dressing room, the central run of fitted wardrobes is broken up by a bespoke dressing-table area that forms part of the fitted furniture. The dressing table also has integrated lighting operated using a discreet push-button switch, separate from the door-activated wardrobe lighting.

What range and finishes were used in this Northaw dressing room?

The project uses the Blyton range in Price Group 1 with Matt Cashmere hinged wardrobe doors. Egger Dark Brown Eucalyptus H3043 ST12 is used for the wardrobe interiors and contrasting external fitted-furniture details, while the doors are finished with brushed steel Boros handles.

How much does a bespoke fitted dressing room cost?

The cost depends on the size and layout of the room, wardrobe range, finishes, number and configuration of wardrobes, interior storage, handles, lighting and additional fitted furniture such as a dressing table. Because every project is made to measure, an accurate quotation needs to be based on your own room and specification.
