Fitted Wardrobes in Bishop’s Stortford – Rockingham Alcove Storage
These fitted wardrobes in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, were designed and installed inside a bedroom alcove where the position of a window, radiator and curtain pole all needed to be considered. The completed made to measure furniture uses two 950mm-wide double wardrobes from our Rockingham range, in a smooth Super Matt Mussel exterior finish.
Inside, the wardrobes are finished in Egger Beige Textile. Behind the doors are hanging sections, internal drawers, a pull-out trouser rail and a special jewellery-storage detail: a discreet extra drawer beneath a glass-topped section of the left-hand chest.
Vertical lighting within both wardrobes is set back from the front and switches on automatically when the doors open. The result is a practical example of fitted furniture in Bishop’s Stortford, designed around the existing bedroom features rather than an off-the-shelf cabinet size.

Bespoke Fitted Wardrobes in Bishop’s Stortford: Rockingham Alcove Project
See how these made to measure fitted wardrobes were designed around a narrow bedroom alcove, radiator and curtain pole, with Super Matt Mussel doors, Beige Textile interiors and individually planned storage.
Made to Measure Fitted Wardrobes for an Alcove in Bishop’s Stortford
The bedroom alcove at this Bishop’s Stortford property measured 2,038mm wide. The design needed to accommodate a radiator beneath the nearby window and leave suitable allowances for the curtain pole. These features mattered because the fitted wardrobes needed to sit properly within the space without ignoring how the room was already used.
We planned two double wardrobes, each 950mm wide, rather than assuming a standard modular configuration. The wardrobes are part of our Rockingham fitted wardrobe range, finished externally in smooth Super Matt Mussel with Egger Beige Textile interiors.
With a floor-to-ceiling height of 2,365mm, the furniture was made at 2,265mm high, including its 100mm plinth. The furniture height was selected to suit the room, while the internal sections could be planned around how the customer wanted to organise their clothes and personal items.
The two wardrobes have different internal purposes. The left-hand double wardrobe includes one fixed top shelf, a single hanging section below and a four-drawer internal chest in its lower section. The drawer arrangement was designed to keep accessories organised as well as clothing.

Glass-Topped Jewellery Storage Hidden Within the Drawers
The left-hand four-drawer chest includes a glass panel across its top. Inside its upper drawer sits another discreet pull-out compartment, designed for jewellery and smaller accessories. Opening the top drawer reveals that secondary storage, which can be viewed through the glass above. It is a useful feature that goes beyond a conventional chest of drawers.
In the right-hand double wardrobe, the storage was arranged differently. A 425mm-wide three-drawer chest provides drawer space, while a fixed top shelf and hanging accommodation give room for clothing. One section allows a longer hanging drop above the drawers, and a pull-out trouser rail sits low down on the right-hand side.
The individual internal components were selected to make each 950mm wardrobe useful for a different mix of clothing: hanging garments, trousers, drawers and small-item storage, without forcing identical interiors behind both pairs of doors.
Sensor-Operated Wardrobe Lighting for Better Visibility
Lighting was installed vertically inside both wardrobes, running from top to bottom of the carcass and positioned approximately 150mm back from the front edge. Door-operated sensors switch the lights on when the wardrobes are opened, helping illuminate the Egger Beige Textile interiors and the hanging and drawer storage.
That detail makes a practical difference in a fitted bedroom. Clothes, jewellery and drawer contents can be easier to see without needing to turn on the main bedroom light.
The finished installation is a genuine example of made to measure fitted wardrobes in Hertfordshire. It combines a carefully considered alcove fit, different storage arrangements in each wardrobe and an integrated lighting feature, while remaining faithful to the customer’s chosen Rockingham and Beige Textile finishes.

What Makes Alcove Fitted Wardrobes More Practical?
A good alcove wardrobe design takes account of the real room rather than just the width on a plan. Window fittings, radiator positions, top finishing space and the way doors open can all influence the final arrangement. On this Bishop’s Stortford project, the two wardrobes were made to measure, with separate storage layouts, a pull-out trouser rail, concealed jewellery storage and sensor lights. Fitted Wardrobes Bishop’s Stortford: Alcove Advice & FAQs
Helpful answers about bespoke fitted wardrobes, fitted furniture, drawers, jewellery storage and integrated lighting, based on this completed Bishop’s Stortford installation.
Planning Fitted Furniture in a Bedroom Alcove
Fitted wardrobes can be especially useful inside an alcove, but the available space is not always as straightforward as a simple wall measurement. A radiator beneath a window, the position of a curtain pole and how a wardrobe door opens can all affect the practical design.
For this Bishop’s Stortford installation, the alcove measured 2,038mm wide and we planned two 950mm double wardrobes, leaving the necessary fitting considerations to be handled in the overall installation design. The furniture was made to 2,265mm high, including its 100mm plinth, for a room with a 2,365mm ceiling.
The customer also needed more than straightforward hanging rails. The left wardrobe combines a fixed shelf, single hanging and four-drawer chest with hidden jewellery storage. The right offers an alternative arrangement with a three-drawer chest, hanging space and a pull-out trouser rail.
Vertical lighting in both cabinets is activated by opening the doors. Because the lighting is set back 150mm from the front, it is integrated within the storage rather than presented as a separate external light fitting.
These are useful considerations for anyone comparing fitted wardrobes in Bishop’s Stortford, wardrobe interior layouts or a wider choice of made to measure fitted wardrobes.
Measure the actual alcove and check nearby fittings before deciding cabinet widths and access.
One cabinet can prioritise drawers and jewellery while another includes hanging and a pull-out trouser rail.
Door-triggered vertical lights bring illumination directly into the compartments used every day.

Can fitted wardrobes be designed for a bedroom alcove?
Yes. These wardrobes were designed for an alcove measuring 2,038mm wide, using two 950mm-wide double wardrobes. The room layout also needed allowances for a window curtain pole and a radiator beneath the window.
What wardrobe range and colour were used?
The project uses our Rockingham range in a smooth Super Matt Mussel exterior finish. The wardrobe interiors are finished in Egger Beige Textile. The smooth Mussel exterior complements the Beige Textile storage interiors.
What storage was built into the left-hand wardrobe?
The left-hand 950mm double wardrobe contains a fixed top shelf, single hanging and a four-drawer internal chest. A discreet additional pull-out jewellery compartment sits inside the top drawer, beneath a glass-topped section.
How is the right-hand wardrobe arranged?
The right-hand 950mm double wardrobe includes a 425mm-wide three-drawer chest, an upper fixed shelf, hanging accommodation with a longer hanging section above the drawers, and a pull-out trouser rail low down on the right-hand side.
Can fitted wardrobes include hidden jewellery storage?
Yes. In this project, the four-drawer chest has a glass panel over a concealed jewellery-storage detail. Opening the upper drawer gives access to a second discreet pull-out compartment designed for smaller accessories.
How do the wardrobe lights work?
Both wardrobes have vertical internal lights set approximately 150mm back from the front of the carcasses. Sensors activate the lighting when the wardrobe doors are opened, making the hanging and internal storage easier to see.
Are these made to measure full-carcass fitted wardrobes?
Yes. Simply Fitted Wardrobes uses full-carcass construction in our made to measure furniture. The two wardrobes in this alcove were designed with different hanging, drawer and specialist storage arrangements.
