This bespoke walk in fitted wardrobe in Southend, near Leigh on Sea, was designed and installed as a dedicated dressing room, with made to measure storage arranged around two walls in an L-shaped layout.
Part of our Goodwood fitted wardrobe range, the furniture features bespoke MDF panelled doors, professionally sprayed in the customer's chosen Blue Vein paint-match colour, with Lancaster Oak interiors.
By combining deeper hanging wardrobes with shallower storage for shelves and drawers, we created a dressing room that makes practical use of the available floor space. A concealed standing dressing area with a mirror and internal drawers adds a personal finishing touch.

How we designed this Goodwood dressing room near Leigh-on-Sea, combining a custom Blue Vein sprayed finish, Lancaster Oak interiors, deep hanging storage and shallower wardrobes with a concealed standing dressing area.
Transforming a Room into a Bespoke Walk-In Dressing Room
This project was completed at a property in Southend, close to the Leigh-on-Sea border. The customer wanted to turn the room into a dedicated walk-in wardrobe and dressing space, with plenty of organised storage and a convenient area for getting ready.
The room offered a generous ceiling height of 2,738mm and an overall long dimension of 4,647mm, with a shorter wall measuring 2,418mm. Rather than using one uniform wardrobe depth throughout, we designed an L-shaped arrangement to suit the available space and the type of storage needed in each section.
The customer chose our Goodwood bespoke wardrobe range. The MDF doors were produced for the design and professionally sprayed in Blue Vein, a paint-match colour selected by the customer. Lancaster Oak was chosen for the wardrobe interiors, giving a warm contrast when the doors are opened.
Along the shorter wall, we installed two double wardrobes, each 1,100mm wide and 600mm deep. The left-hand wardrobe provides double hanging, while the wardrobe nearest the corner contains an upper shelf and long hanging space.
The corner required careful planning to allow the two runs to meet. We used a blank section and a right-hand hinged door within the corner arrangement so the adjoining wardrobes could continue around into the L-shape while remaining accessible.
From that corner, the return run incorporates two 1,000mm-wide wardrobe sections made at a shallower depth of 450mm. This was an intentional decision: the customer needed shelves and drawers in this part of the room rather than conventional full-depth hanging space.
Reducing the depth of these wardrobes helped preserve more usable floor space in the centre of the dressing room. It also allowed the internal storage to be designed around how the customer intended to use each section.
The first wardrobe on the return run contains six adjustable shelves arranged vertically, providing flexible storage for folded clothing and other personal items.
The final wardrobe was designed around the customer's daily dressing routine. We created an internal four-drawer chest at a comfortable standing height, with a mirrored back panel above and an additional top shelf.
This created a concealed standing dressing table area, giving the customer somewhere to use the mirror and keep makeup, accessories and clothes organised. When the wardrobe doors are closed, the dressing space is neatly hidden within the fitted furniture.
All the wardrobes were made at 2,630mm high to suit the room's tall proportions. The finished furniture follows the L-shaped layout, with the customer's selected Blue Vein exterior and Lancaster Oak interiors bringing the different storage areas together.

An L-Shaped Goodwood Dressing Room
The room was planned with two connected runs of bespoke wardrobes. The customer's Blue Vein paint-match finish gives the panelled Goodwood doors a consistent appearance, while the corner arrangement connects the storage without unnecessarily compromising access.
Full-Depth Hanging and Shallow Shelving
We used 600mm-deep wardrobes for hanging clothing, while the return wardrobes were made at 450mm deep for shelves and drawers. This allowed different types of storage to work together without taking more space from the dressing room than necessary.
A Concealed Standing Dressing Area
Inside the shallower wardrobe, a four-drawer chest sits beneath a mirrored back panel, with shelving above. This provides a practical area for makeup and getting ready while keeping the storage behind the same bespoke doors as the rest of the room.

Planning an L-Shaped Walk-In Wardrobe That Works Every Day
A dedicated dressing room needs more than a line of wardrobes. The best layout depends on how you use your clothes, how much hanging space is required and whether you also need drawers, shelves or a place to get ready.
In this Southend installation, the L-shaped arrangement allowed us to separate the storage into different areas. The deeper wardrobe run was used for hanging clothes, while the shallower return provided adjustable shelving and a concealed standing dressing space.
That difference in depth is important. Building every wardrobe at the same depth would have taken up more of the room without improving the shelving or drawer storage. By designing the furniture around its intended use, we were able to preserve more open space in the centre.
The customer's Blue Vein spray-finished Goodwood doors provide a consistent exterior, while the Lancaster Oak interiors give the storage a contrasting finish. The standing dressing area makes the room more convenient for getting ready, without needing a separate freestanding dressing table.
