Designing Fitted Wardrobes Around a Central Chimney Breast
This fitted wardrobe project was completed in a period property in Colchester, Essex. The bedroom retained traditional architectural features, including its original fireplace, which had previously been blocked off, and the central chimney breast. The customer wanted to make better use of the available bedroom storage while choosing a wardrobe design that complemented the traditional character of the property.
The main challenge was the chimney breast positioned in the centre of the wall. Rather than interrupting the run of fitted wardrobes or leaving the central space unused, we designed the entire installation to create a continuous and balanced frontage. The customer also wanted mirrors and a convenient space for watching television from the bed, combining traditional bedroom furniture styling with practical modern features.
On either side of the chimney breast, the wardrobes were built at a standard 600mm depth. These included four double wardrobes, each 800mm wide, arranged as two units on the left and two on the right.
Directly in front of the chimney breast, the central double wardrobe was designed at 1,400mm wide but only 260mm deep. This change in depth was concealed behind the wardrobe frontage, allowing the doors to continue in one straight line across the bedroom.
The shallow central section was not wasted space. It incorporated shelving, a dedicated compartment for a television and power brought through for the TV. The mirrored central doors allowed the television storage to be concealed when not in use.
For the fitted wardrobe doors, the customer chose our Rockingham shaker fitted wardrobe range, adapted to feature four equal recessed panels with additional mid rails. These lines continue across the wardrobe doors, creating a traditional, carefully proportioned appearance that suits the property's period character.
The Dust Grey woodgrain effect exterior was paired with warm Lancaster Oak interiors and Rugby knob handles. Together, these details gave the bedroom a traditional fitted furniture character while providing practical modern storage.
The wardrobe heights were designed for the room's 2,415mm floor-to-ceiling measurement, with the wardrobes made at 2,315mm high and finishing details planned around the remaining space.
Inside the full depth fitted wardrobes, the hanging sections featured pull-down rails to make the upper storage easier to access. The end wardrobes included lower hanging space, while the two wardrobes nearer the centre each incorporated an internal five drawer chest.
Warm white sensor-operated LED lighting was also included throughout the wardrobes. The lighting illuminates the Lancaster Oak interiors when the wardrobe doors are opened.
To complete the bedroom, we also built a matching bay window seat, bringing the fitted furniture together with a consistent finish and style.

A Chimney Breast in the Middle of the Wardrobes
The central chimney breast, part of the room's original fireplace arrangement, reduced the available depth behind part of the wardrobe run. By using 260mm-deep storage in the centre and 600mm-deep wardrobes at either side, the entire frontage could remain straight and symmetrical while complementing the traditional property.
Symmetrical Hanging and Drawer Storage
The two outer double wardrobes contain pull-down hanging rails, a central shelf and lower hanging space. The next double wardrobe on each side contains a pull-down rail above an internal five-drawer chest, making the arrangement symmetrical from the centre.
Hidden TV Storage and Warm Oak Shelving
Behind the mirrored central doors is a shallow Lancaster Oak storage section with shelving and a dedicated TV space. It makes practical use of the chimney breast area without changing the appearance of the fitted wardrobe frontage.
